About us

Global Steel Consultants is a network of independent specialists working in the steel industry, based in the UK. There are eight members of the Group who in the past have worked for steel companies, banks and consultancy firms specialising in steel related activities. Between us we cover most areas of technical and commercial work within the industry.

Much of our work is due diligence carried out for investors: either for M&A activities or relating to long term bank loans. We also undertake market studies and feasibility studies for new projects. We do not undertake detailed design work but are able to produce "bankable" documents for feasibility studies when this is required.

Another aspect of our work is our reports for Metal Bulletin on particular topics related to the industry. These publications have included a review of the European steel industry and a report on future trends within the industry worldwide. We are currently writing a report on "value creation" with the industry; especially focussing on downstream activities.

Our professional expertise covers:

  • Economics and business strategy
  • Market research and forecasting
  • Financial planning and modelling
  • Iron & steel making technology
  • Rolling & finishing technology
  • Shipping and materials handling

We have worked in nearly all the main steel producing countries of the world for international institutions (e.g. EBRD, IFC, World Bank, European Commission, UNIDO, etc.) as well as for private clients, banks and government agencies.

Global Steel Consultants is not a legal entity in its own right and for each project an appropriate member is chosen to manage the work and be responsible for the contract. As individuals, we either operate as "sole traders" under UK accounting rules or own our own limited companies. Andrzej Kotas owns the company "Metals Consulting International" and several of our projects have been undertaken under this "banner".

We work on daily rates or on fixed price contracts at fees below those of the leading international strategy firms, against a scope of work agreed in advance with the client. This can be for defined deliverables, or on a "call-off" basis to respond rapidly to the client's needs. We are always happy to write proposals within the context of formal bidding procedures.
